At Rustico, Artisans Craft Simple & Authentic Lifestyle Pieces & Hand-sewn Leather Journals

For Isaac Childs, a post-college backpacking trip through Europe was the inspiration for founding his company, Rustico. As he tells it, “In the Spring of 1998, I was addicted to traveling and journaling. I was headed on a backpacking trip to Europe and I debated getting six journals but that would’ve been overkill, so I bought five. My buddies and I spent most of our time crossing Eastern Europe.” Isaac wrote journal entries from destinations including the Czech Republic, Romania, and Finland, and as he kept track of his nine-week journey. Those well-used journals soon started to fall apart and lose pages as he continued to document his life after that European trip. It was then that he decided he needed to find a functional and durable, yet stylish journal. After a disappointing search for the perfect journal, he enrolled in a bookbinding course, found a top-grade leather hide and a ream of 100% imported, cotton rag mill paper, and began creating one. “I was on a mission to craft it right with all the proper ingredients,” he said. His first hand-sewn leather journal was made and a business was born when he teamed up with two friends with two goals in mind: First, bring back authentic American craftsmanship, and second, the business will never get in the way of friendship. Rustico, which started as an online store, now has a family of artists who handcraft inspiring lifestyle pieces in their Lindon, Utah workshop. The company’s lineup includes leather binders, notebooks, hand-sewn journals, handmade stationery, writing gear, home decor, and other leather accessories. In the past few months, Rustico also added washable and reusable cotton fabric face masks to their offerings. “To this day...from journals to our wide line of handcrafted accessories for your life, Rustico continues to compliment and inspire the simple, but rooted perspective of living authentic,” according to Isaac.
