Michael McHenry "Scores" Big Providing Meals with His "Healthy and Full" Initiative
Restaurateur, Michael McHenry, Starts “The Healthy and Full Initiative” to Feed Utah’s Frontline Heroes and to Keep Restaurant Teams Working Who knew being a competitive bowler could teach so many life lessons? “I learned so many things about being goal-orientated, competitive, and working hard to be successful,” said Michael McHenry, of The McHenry Group, who bowled his first perfect game of 300 points at 15 years old. “Yup, I pretty much spent my entire youth at the Ritz Classic on State Street in Salt Lake. I have probably bowled 30,000 games. It is amazing how the things I learned in bowling translates to business. Bowling is actually how I first got started in the restaurant business,” said McHenry. Healthy & Full Initiative Provides jobs and meals Figuratively speaking, when all the pins don’t go down, you have to regroup and switch gears... and that is exactly what McHenry has done during the pandemic to keep restaurant employees working and to provide “amazing chef-made” meals to those frontline heroes who are working long shifts in healthcare. McHenry started the Healthy and Full Initiative, earlier this month, to unite local businesses to provide 200 or more meals a day to those working on the frontline. McHenry, who owns three restaurant brands: Oak Wood Fire Kitchen in Draper, Ginger Street in Salt Lake City and Dirty Bird in Provo, are all creating and delivering chef-made, individually wrapped, balanced meals to workers at the University of Utah Health Centers, The Intermountain Health Care and Mountain Star Hospital. Other restaurants participating in the program are Provisions SLC, Honest Eatery,“ and Nomad Eatery. "As our initiative grows, we encourage other restaurants to participate,” he said. “Many of these frontline workers are on their feet 15 or more hours a day, they don’t have time to sleep, let alone run to the store and fill their panty with good food. They all deserve an amazing meal and we want to provide that,” said McHenry. “We encourage people who have the means and who can afford to step up and give money to sponsor the meals that are delivered on any given day,” he said. “Utah is a place where people take care of each other, and we are overwhelmed with the heartfelt support for this program.” “When someone donates and sponsors some meals, we ask them to take the “Challenge 5 Friends” and ask five other people to do the same,” said McHenry. “We can rely on this community to get through any disaster.” The recommended donation amount is $250, but, “most are giving more, and that is amazing,” he said.
